DIY: Can you make your own hydrogen car?

If you’re looking to save money on gas, then a Hydrogen conversion kit is one of the best ways to save some money without the expense of buying a smaller car, or a hybrid. You may have heard of them referred to as HHO systems, Brown’s gas, or Oxyhydrogen. Some people also call it running your car on water.

The kits use a process that was patented in 1977 by a man named Yull Brown, which is why HHO is often referred to as Brown’s Gas. It involves running electricity through water in a process called electrolysis to cause the water (H2O) to break apart into two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom (hence, HHO).

The gas is then mixed with the air going into your car’s engine and adds to the gas vapor that is burned to make the engine run.

For a variety of reasons (one being that tanks to haul all that water and store the hydrogen in your car are expensive and heavy). It’s not possible to run your car solely on HHO, but it is possible to get as much as a 50% increase in mileage. That’s like paying $2.91 a gallon at today’s prices!

Some of the benefits of adding a hydrogen conversion kit to your car are:

Make your engine more efficient and increase power.

Make your car friendlier to the environment

Reduce wear on your engine due to less engine strain and increase its longevity

Possibly qualify for IRS tax credits due to using green technology

Have cleaner emissions that are better for the environment

Lower maintenance costs

And of course, improve your mileage by as much as 50%!

The alterations you need to make to your car are minor, and anyone who has some ability to work with tools can create an HHO device. If you aren’t comfortable with that, any mechanic can complete the task as well.

While there are expensive units on the market that you can purchase and have professionally installed in your car, they run from $600-$1000 and take awhile to recoup the costs. Believe it or not you can buy all the parts to make one down at your local hardware store.

A basic kit can be made with only the following, though to get the most bang for your buck a system with a condensation collector is recommended to prevent getting steam and water vapor in your engine:

 

Distilled water

Quart sized container (many guides also use PVC plumbing pipe as it’s more solid)

Electrical wire

Rubber vacuum hose

Baking soda

Adding this system to your car is quick and simple and can also be removed just as quickly as well. It causes no damage to your engine and won’t void your warranty. It can even be added to diesels.
