Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Finally an Alternative To IC Engines
From 10 to 12 dollars per barrel five or six years ago the oil prices are hovering around 130 dollars per barrel mark. Therefore, there is every need to reduce oil consumption by resorting to more efficient propulsion systems for automobiles. Efficient propulsion systems not only reduce energy consumption but also reduce emission of harmful pollutants like unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and Nox. Fuel cells look attractive alternatives to IC Engines and therefore, are a subject matter of serious research and development all over the world.
What’s the average person supposed to do when the gasoline they need can only be purchased at luxury-item prices?
Those of us who are familiar with economics know that when the demand is inflexible and when such demand outstrips the supply even marginally the prices rise disproportionately to the demand supply gap. A 5 percent short supply may result in 50 percent rise in prices. This kind of situation is what speculators love because withholding even small supplies can mean very high profits for them to the misery of the consumer.
The oil producers also love this kind of supply demand scenario wherein their product becomes pricier and pricier with every minor cut in production. The only solution is to cut down consumption and cool the market not only to reduce the quantity of fuel you buy but also rein in the profiteering speculators.
Therefore, cutting down consumption of petroleum products is the only way to discipline greedy OPEC and profiteering refiners and marketers like Exxon.
Of course, independence from oil companies by finding energy sources which are not based on hydrocarbons like battery powered vehicles would be an ideal solution but the current state of storage battery technology precludes large scale switchover to battery powered vehicles. Therefore, your alternatives are hybrid vehicles which are now commercially available or the futuristic hydrogen fuel cells.
Water Fuel Kits And Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Water Fuel Kits are basically pollution reduction devices. They do not reduce energy consumption significantly. Fuel cells as mentioned above are entirely new propulsion systems. They use hydrocarbon energy much more efficiently by producing ionized hydrogen and oxygen from water which produce electricity when they recombine into water. By being more efficient users of hydrocarbons, fuel cells reduce energy consumption significantly.
The reduction in energy consumption by using fuel cells could be as much as 50 percent. This will have a serious downward pressure on your oil bill because it will not reduce quantity but will also have a salutary effect on the oil prices. A 25 to 30 percent reduction in consumption may drive down oil prices to the levels obtaining 4 or 5 years ago, or in short you might just have to pay 10 dollars for filling up a fuel tank for which you are paying 100 dollars now and that fuel tank will take your car twice the distance it does now.
We term hydrogen fuel cells as futuristic. That may not be a fully correct statement. Every auto major is trying out fuel cell power experimental vehicles. The pace of research is furious. Do not be surprised if fuel cell powered vehicles are commercially available in les than five years from now.
Hydrogen fuel cells may be the answer to our prayers for freedom from greedy OPEC and profiteering oil market speculators.
